if i had shingles on my face and lip. and i kiss someone. will that someone get a cold sore?
cold sores are caused by the Herpes Simplex virus, whereas Zoster is an infection caused by the Herpes varicella-zoster virus.
i had blisters on my FACE and my LIP, too. does that mean i have cold sore and shingles at the same time?

The herpes virus that causes shingles and chickenpox is not the same as the herpes viruses that causes genital herpes (which can be sexually transmitted) or herpes mouth sores. Shingles is medically termed Herpes zoster.
Herpes group consists of Herpes simplex (HSV 1 and 2), Varicella(Zoster), EBV(Epstein Barr), CMV(Cytomegalo), and KSHV (virus responsible for Kaposi sarcoma in AIDS).
Herpes zoster (Shingles) and Herpes simplex(fever blisters) are the skin rashes caused by VZV (Varicella) and HSV respectively: 2 different organisms, the first difference.
HS includes 2 types of rashes. Those rashes involving mucocutaneous junctions of the face, mouth,eye lids (HSV 1) and those involving genitalia (caused by HSV 2). This demarcation is gradually being lost ( due to orogenital contact)
The primary infections (infection in a person who has never been exposed to the virus before) caused by HSV and VZV differ in the way they spread and their clinical presentations.
HSV causes a primary infection that spreads through saliva (kissing) or sexually(HSV 2) or close contact. Thus, HSV infection is acquired through contact.
Varicella virus on the hand is acquired through the respiratory route.
The primary infection of Varicella is respiratory, but also leads to a diffuse rash on the skin commonly referred to as Chicken Pox.
After the primary infection both viruses go hide in the ganglion cells of the nerves supplying the area of skin they have infected. Mostly the Trigeminal or gasserian ganglion. In this ganglion they maintain a state of dynamic equillibrium (they are dividing but are restrained by the body’s defenses).
The secondary rash is usually preceded by a tingling sensation or itching in simplex, while zoster recurrences are assosciated with PAIN
Post rash pain (post herpetic neuralgia) is seen following zoster in most cases as the nerve is damaged by inflammation and thus causes permanent pain. This is rare with simplex.
Shingles (Herpes zoster) is an extremely painful skin rash caused by the Varicella zoster virus.
Shingles can be spread from an affected person to children or adults who have not had chickenpox. But instead of developing shingles, these people develop chickenpox. Once they have had chickenpox, people cannot catch shingles (or contract the virus) from someone else. Once infected, however, people have the potential to develop shingles later in life.
Shingles is contagious to people that have not previously had chickenpox, as long as there are new blisters forming and old blisters healing. Similar to chickenpox, the time prior to healing or crusting of the blisters is the contagious stage of shingles. Once all of the blisters are crusted over, the virus can no longer be spread.
Cold sores are also extremely contagious! You need to talk to your doctor and have them prescribe you Valtrex.
My mom and daughter suffer from cold sores. Anyone truly can suffer from them without getting them from someone else. Stress can be the main reason for breakouts…..but they are very contagious!! Passed mainly through kissing.
Valtrex will dry up the cold sore immediately. This does not have to be taken only the day a cold sore starts. The first time my daughter took it was 10 days into the thing, and it dried it up immediately the next day. She continued to take it for the next 3 days until there was no sign of her ever having it.
